Kedros

I have been working with Jano for five years, during which time he has contributed 500 man-days of work to my projects. I am not at all happy to be writing this review. It likely means I will have to find a suitable replacement for Jano. It is hard to find a reliable, responsible, and experienced database specialist—especially one with a sense of humor.

Projects where Jano was responsible for resolving operational incidents:

Over those five years, Jano completed every task assigned to him within the required timeframe and to the expected standard of quality. There is nothing more to add. Perhaps just one thing: Jano has the ability to explain even complex problems in plain language, making them understandable even to listeners with less technical expertise.

Kedros / Skytoll

During 2019 and 2020, Ján Majláth worked under my supervision on the project to build the Czech toll system, specifically in the area of developing the data warehouse (DWH) solution.

This project involved addressing several challenges and issues associated with the phased development of the core systems from which the data warehouse (DWH) was to read its source data.

Jano’s primary task was to handle the correct loading of data from source systems into the DWH staging layer, but he was also actively involved in preparing individual star schemas within the DWH presentation layer.

His contribution to the project was significant, partly due to the situation regarding the source systems. He was willing to patiently and repeatedly modify code—even on weekends—that had already been fine-tuned for extracting data into the DWH staging layer.

Drawing on his knowledge, experience, and study of the source systems, he was able to quickly identify critical points in the data processing workflow and propose suitable solutions. He worked independently and efficiently. His communication with database administrators, the operations team, and the DWH team was constructive and free of conflict.

Patience, determination, knowledge, and overtime work were the key traits that perfectly define Jan in this project, and I am grateful to have been his project manager!

First Data

Ján Majláth worked at First Data under my supervision from April 2009 to May 2011. During this period, we performed background data processing, which involved processing data at the file and database record levels.

Files and database records were processed automatically, handled by software modules running on Unix (AIX version 6.1) and within an Oracle database (version 10g, later 11g). A proprietary system was developed for this automated processing; it is configurable, supports monitoring, and is easily extensible. Ján Majláth’s primary responsibilities included creating new modules for the system, modifying existing ones, and providing post-implementation support. He quickly mastered the system and utilized it effectively—tasks that required proficiency in Unix command-line programming (shell scripts) and the PL/SQL database language, as well as an understanding of how these two environments interact.

As previously mentioned, key technologies included Unix shell programming, PL/SQL, and the creation and optimization of SQL queries. He approached the work proactively, striving for the best and most efficient implementation while taking into account the design of existing solutions.

During Ján Majláth’s tenure, new report and export structures were introduced, requiring an XML format. Ján Majláth took a proactive approach to working with the new technology and contributed significantly to the successful implementation of these requirements.

His work also involved providing support and consultation to the department responsible for customer problem resolution. He maintained a proactive and friendly approach; colleagues turned to him quite frequently, and he was always ready to help.

His key positive qualities include reliability, thoroughness, a commitment to continuous learning, and a positive approach to teamwork.

IBM

Ján Majláth worked for IBM on the Datawarehouse Release 2/3 project.

The Data Warehouse Release 2/3 project—one of the largest IT projects for the client and of its kind in Slovakia—was implemented for Slovak Telekom between May 2006 and September 2007. The project aimed to deliver business information to support decision-making in the form of static reports, OLAP cubes, dashboards, and data mining models across 14 of the client's business areas.

More than 50 employees from both the client and the supplier were involved in this comprehensive project. The project team was organized into micro-teams, with each micro-team responsible for implementing a portion of the data warehouse solution for specific business areas—such as Customer Behavior Prediction, Trouble Ticket Management, Revenue Assurance, and others. The micro-team Ján Majláth worked in was responsible for implementing the Revenue Assurance area, specifically the Traffic Analysis component.

Each micro-team was responsible for the solution's entire lifecycle: analysis of the specific domain and user requirements, impact analysis, solution design, report design, implementation of ETL processes and reports, testing, determining the integration method for the existing solution, documentation, support for UAT and deployment, and post-implementation support.

Ján Majláth worked as a Data Integration Analyst/Developer, responsible for the data component of the solution—covering requirements and impact analysis, design, implementation, and testing of ETL processes for specific business areas.

Given the complexity of the domain and the vast volume of data, managing the expectations and requirements of business users was a key success factor in the project. Thanks to the proactive approach of the entire micro-team—and Ján Majláth personally—this was successfully achieved, as evidenced by the high level of user satisfaction following the solution's deployment.

As the Project Delivery Manager, I worked closely with Ján Majláth and the micro-team of which he was a member. Through his responsible and meticulous approach to completing project tasks, Ján Majláth contributed significantly to the project's successful conclusion. He took a proactive approach to problem-solving, consistently aiming—in collaboration with the user and his colleagues—for the optimal solution in terms of quality, performance, and implementation time. He approached problem-solving in a constructive and pragmatic manner.

Ján Majláth also made a significant contribution to the broader team's collaboration, particularly by providing consultations to colleagues in his areas of expertise—most notably SQL and PL/SQL programming, data processing optimization and efficiency improvements, and Unix-platform (HP-UX) scripting languages.

For the reasons stated, I can recommend Ján Majláth as a high-quality employee for participation in other projects, including those of a large scale.

Thesis

Supervisor's Assessment of Ján Majláth's Master's Thesis: "The Use of Kohonen Neural Networks in Robotics"

Robot coordinate transformation is an important and frequently addressed task in robotics. It is typically approached from the perspective of the kinematic analysis of mechanisms, employing trigonometric methods. Recently, MLP (multilayer perceptron) neural networks have also begun to be used in research to solve this problem; they emulate exact analytical solutions by learning complex non-linear mappings between Cartesian and joint coordinates. To the best of my knowledge, the approach utilizing Kohonen SOM (Self-Organizing Map) neural networks is novel and is based on principles that are more likely to be applied in higher vertebrates than those underlying MLP-type networks.

To address the problem, the student needed to develop a simulation environment, as this type of network is not adequately supported by any existing simulation package suitable for neural network modeling. This required mastering the complex subject of Kohonen self-organizing maps to a high level of proficiency. He successfully accomplished both tasks to an excellent standard.

The transformation problem was initially addressed using a standard SOM network. However, experiments revealed that the standard SOM was unsuitable due to ambiguities arising from the so-called "flipping" of the network. Consequently, it became necessary to implement and integrate an "extended SOM" into the simulation environment. This model was further enhanced with a reinforcement learning algorithm, which increases the degree of learning autonomy.

The author conducted a wide range of diverse simulation experiments using the SOM network, confirming the validity of this approach to the problem. At the same time, this work provided insights into the limitations of the approach. I consider the key contributions to be the use of three-dimensional SOM networks—which appear only rarely in the literature—as well as the application of reinforcement learning algorithms and a systematic, thorough approach to the simulation experiments. A random Gaussian vector generator was also developed as a by-product of this work; the simulation environment created for the project is already being used in teaching the "Artificial Intelligence Applications" course.

The author’s idea of using a SOM network for color image compression is entirely original. This demonstrates the author's deep understanding of the subject matter. Although this novel method is not yet comparable in terms of efficiency to techniques commonly used in computing, it represents a highly interesting result that testifies to the author's creative engagement.

J. Majláth worked with a high degree of independence. He required no consultations regarding the actual programming, needing only guidance on the direction of problem-solving.

Conclusion: I rate J. Majláth’s diploma thesis as "excellent" and recommend it for an award from the Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences.
